Fitting a veil on a fascinator

Generally allow 30 to 50 cm of veil for a fascinator, more for a hat with a wide brim or a veil reaching below the chin.

The simplest method consists of gathering the upper edge with the thread, in small stitches, then distributing the gathers evenly before attaching everything to the frame or under the headband tape. The gathers must be tight and regular: this is what gives the characteristic volume.

Sew by hand, with an exactly matching fine thread. Tulle marks easily, a machine seam leaves visible marks.

Choose the fall length

• Up to the eyebrows — the most discreet, for a retro touch without commitment.
• To the tip of the nose — the classic length of ceremonial fascinators.
• Up to the chin — more theatrical, reserved for very formal outfits.
• Back veil — falling at the back rather than over the face, a modern alternative.

Working with tulle without deforming it

Veil tulle is elastic in one direction and rigid in the other. Identify the direction before cutting: a veil cut in the wrong direction will not fall correctly.

The edges do not fray, so there is no need to overcast them. Cut cleanly with fine scissors, following a row of stitches to obtain a regular line.

To give shape, steaming at a distance - never the iron in contact - allows you to shape the fall. Leave to cool on the mannequin head or on an inverted salad bowl.

Other uses

Beyond millinery, the veil is used as a table decoration for ceremonies, in wrapping sugared almonds, superimposed on a bouquet, or as a light veil on a framed work.
